Fact #170377

When:

Short story:

The Who play at The Schaefer Music Festival, Wollman Skating Rink, Central Park, New York City, USA, supported by Mandala.

Full article:

Binky Philips (audience) : As they hit the nihilistic coda (of My Generation), Pete very deliberately walked to the edge of the stage and with great purpose, systematically started whacking the top of the Schaefer Beer sign with a nice old sunburst Fender Stratocaster ... clear across the length of the stage while the guitar was still plugged in, groaning and screaming.

The entire sign eventually fell about twelve feet and broke in the photographer’s pit. No, the guitar didn’t survive either.

Robert Shelton (reviewer, New York Times) : A capacity audience watched and cheered as Peter Townshend broke up his electric guitar. Whether Mr Townshend was having a breakdown or being a showman was not discernible. Perhaps he thought, as have some other pop musicians recently, that the demolition of his instrument was making a statement. If so, it is the sort of statement that is populating our mental hospitals.
