When:

Short story:

Elton John plays at Madison Square Garden, New York City, USA. Despite losing his voice at one point, he delivers a successful show.

Full article:

Wayne Newton (singer/fan) : I heard this voice singing, and then Elton walked past me, totally alone. About ten minutes later, there was the slam of a car door, and Renate came in with Bob Halley, Elton's bodyguard and another man. She came only for the first and third nights. She'd stay in the dressing room until after the show started, then be ushered up to the wings. And she'd leave well before the end of the show .

I heard that before the first night, he hadn't been able to speak at all. He'd made a joke of it by arriving backstage dressed as Harpo Marx, and running through honking a motor horn. Another night, I was there before the show at around 6 pm when no one was on stage but Elton and his piano tuner. He played for about five minutes, and then his voice completely cut out. They were four great shows that week, but in every one there'd be moments when his voice just went. On the last night, the audience were virtually singing the words because he couldn't. I heard he was due to go to Australia, then coming back to the States in January. I couldn't see how he was going to make it.
