Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick) : When I got to the studio, and when Lennon came in, he said, "Oh, it's you." He'd heard from Jack Douglas who got us involved with that. He thought I was from Ozzie and Harriet, that's what I think it was. He didn't think I was from The Bowery Boys. He knew who we were then. You know he'd say, "I've got Bun E. Carlos." He probably thought he was Carlos Alomar for all I know. After that he knew who I was and we got along real well. I got to play on a couple of songs ("I'm Losing You"/"I'm Movin' On") and we came back a second time after we got back from Japan, 'cause that was August 12, 1980. It was cool. I gave him my string-bender, a Fender electric guitar. I got it back three years later from Jack Douglas who got it back from them. Also I had Hamer make me a guitar that I gave to John and I think Sean or Julian has it.

They gave us chord charts so we knew the lengths and the widths of the songs. Basically I played what I did. Earl Slick copied my licks. Maybe someday the original version will come out. Andy Newmark copied Bun E.'s stuff. And when I was there Lennon said, "Gee, I wish I had had you on Cold Turkey 'cause Clapton choked." You get stuck doing that one riff over and over, although I always thought that sounded cool. Lennon wanted it more like what I was doing in the studio there.

Lennon was a real good rhythm player. When he played leads, they were sloppy but that was cool, that attitude. He had it. He was songwriter. I think of myself as a songwriter, not an ace virtuoso guitar guy. I happen to play guitar. He was cool to work with. He was great.
