Fact #166980

When:

Short story:

The Cure play at The Opera House, Palmerston North, New Zealand, Oceania.

Full article:

Robert Smith (The Cure) : It was all starting to go wrong with Matty (keyboard player Matthieu Hartley). He was getting very grumpy, very tired, and moaning that he couldn’t get any vegetarian food – lots of little things upset him. It wasn’t really us, it was the lifestyle.

Simon Gallup (bassist, The Cure) : It got to the point where we weren’t talking to him and he wasn’t talking to us. He’d go off on his own and drink a bottle of vodka, things like that, and instead of getting lifted up by drinking, he’d get more withdrawn and we just grew further and further apart.

Robert Smith : He used to go off before we went on stage, he wouldn’t be in the dressing room and, when we came offstage, he’d go off again on his own.

Matthieu Hartley (keyboards, The Cure) : I was starting to get pissed off with the direction the band was taking, not my style of music at all. Also, I was treated strangely, childishly. Robert stopped talking to me. So did Lol. I’d had enough… it showed when we played.
