The images accompanying this entry are scans of documents relating to Ringo Starr's day of interviews at The Dorchester Hotel, London, on Apr 4, 1992. One document is Ringo's schedule for the day, the other is my diary entry, written while I was there with Ringo.
I also made separate notes because I was there on behalf of Replay magazine as a fly on the wall, to see what a day in Ringo's working life was like. I noted, for example, that he looked well, his hair was short, he was wearing tinted shades, a blue denim jacket, dark jeans with a metal-studded black belt, red suede shoes. He had two rings on the fingers of his right hand, one on his left. He wore star-shaped diamond ear rings which swung about when he shook his head. He had a gold Rolex, a chunky gold-chain bracelet and a gold bangle.
The room in which the interviews took place boasted a deep pile carpet, marble pillars and lots of gilt decorations on the furniture. There were crystal ashtrays, fine bone china cups for tea,
Ringo used hand gestures a lot when communicating, and picked his nose just like a regular human being. He flashed the peace sign frequently.
He had a very attentive assistant, Joan Woodgate, a somewhat matronly middle-aged woman, who made sure everything was just as he wanted it.
By about 3.30 Ringo was yawning frequently, which he put down to jet lag. He also said he'd just had the flu, which had caused him to cancel several media commitments, including The Jonathan Ross Show.
After the German tv interview at 3.30, which he found a strain, he disappeared to another room for a cup of tea, and returned wearing a leather jacket. He noticed that someone had removed the apple strudel which he'd saved from lunch, and he was not amused.
