Fact #165903

When:

Short story:

Bob Dylan plays the first of two nights at Troy G. Chastain Memorial Park Amphitheater, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, supported by The Alarm.

Full article:

Mike Peters (The Alarm) : We played at this place called Chastain Park in Atlanta. Before the gig, Eliot comes in and goes, "President Jimmy Carter's in the audience. He knows you from Britain and would like to meet you." I thought, "What? This is cool, the peanut farmer wants to meet me."

So I went out with Eliot and Chastain Park in Atlanta was one of these barbecue shed type of gigs and all the area in front of the stage was all tables and people would come in with their hampers and have their dinner. You know, they're tucking into their roast beef and all that during your set. And Jimmy Carter and his party are in the front row. So I go out the side and come in to meet Jimmy Carter. He stands up and says "Hello," and I reach into my back pocket like this and pull out a camera. And all these security guards just tumble in on top of me because they thought I was pulling out a gun. And Jimmy Carter was like, "Hey man, it's cool." Well, he didn't say, "Hey man," but it sounded like that.

And I got to do my photograph with Jimmy Carter and it was dead cool. I brought it home and my dad was dead proud, he put it on his mantelpiece. I think he thought it was Ronald Reagan at the time.
But then when the gig went off, you know we've got the song Spirit Of '76. For us, it's all about punk rock, but for America the Spirit Of 76 means independence from the Brits and all that. So we're in the middle of the gig and we're going down OK, because they're all having their dinner and we're like rocking it a bit, so it's not quite hitting home like we usually do. And I get to the bit and go, "Let's hear it for the Spirit Of 76!" and Jimmy Carter gets up from his seat, puts his hands in the air and claps. And the whole place gets up on their feet because the president's up. It was amazing - we had the gig by the balls from then. Superb.
