Cilla Black : Liverpool in those days was a little Ireland. Even if you wanted to work in a shop, they'd ask your religion. C+A took Catholics, for instance. And there used to be murder on 12 July (Orange Day) and 17 March (St. Patrick's Day). Along Great Homer Street there were Catholic shops on one side of the road, like the Irish butchers who only sold meat from the pig, and Protestant ones on the other. There were Catholic streets and Protestant streets. You might get the odd Catholic family living in Roscommon Street but they had to disappear on 12 July or their lives would be made hell.
