John Entwistle (bassist, The Who) : The 1989 re-union tour was good … It was the first tour we'd done that made any kind of money. In the past we'd to go out for three weeks and come out of it with a couple of hundred thousand each and then take a couple of years off to spend it and go out again for another three weeks. None of us were becoming millionaires. But on the final tour we made so much money we really didn't know what to do with it.

Pete Townshend (guitarist, The Who) : The 1989 re-union tour was a piece of cake. I played the acoustic guitar, strummed along while another guitarist over there played all the hard solos and I would just smile at the crowd. I had to do my hair before the show, of course, and jump in the chartered aeroplane afterwards. Hahaha! It was fantastic, such fun and such luxury. It was like, This is the way to live. It was brief, but I loved it. I felt like I was doing my best work every day.

Roger Daltrey (vocals, the Who) : I loved every minute of it. Physically, I was in bad shape for that tour. Very bad shape. I had something wrong with me from birth on the inside that all of a sudden had come to life. It was called a mermangioma, which is a bunch of varicose veins in my guts. I’m okay now, I had it all cut out.

On that tour when I started singing and all the blood would go down because you start pumping your diaphragm, the thing would blow up like a balloon. It stopped me eating. I lost so much weight. God, I was ill on that tour. But the singing was wonderful. And the crowds got me through it. Again, I loved doing Tommy when we did it. I didn’t like all the guest stars. I’m not that kind of singer. I need to warm up and stay there. Oh, man, is it hard work!
