Short story:
UK tv show Top Of The Pops features live appearances by Squeeze, Kate Bush, The Real Thing, The Buzzcocks, Dennis Brown and Sham 69. Squeeze are obliged to change the sexually-suggestive lyrics of their hit Cool For Cats which are considered too risque for early evening tv broadcast.
Full article:
Chris Difford (Squeeze) : We were victims of censorship when we did Cool For Cats. The producers made us change the word 'bleedin'' to 'bloomin''. We also had to change the line 'give the dog a bone'; it became 'give the dog a phone'. Absolute madness, totally farcical. The odd thing about it was that it was for a show which was going out live, with a live vocal, so I could have sang anything I wanted.
Top Of The Pops was incredibly important at the beginning of Squeeze's career, and even when were a bit long in the tooth it was a still a show we'd aspire to be on.
That first time was really memorable, because the BBC sent a Rolls Royce to pick us up from our homes. Up to then, my mum had always been unimpressed by anything the band had done, but once a Roller turned up on our estate she became our biggest fan. She'd only ever seen one at a funeral. TOTP was the yardstick that helped parents equate what success was. After that, my mum and dad would always have the neighbours round to watch us on the telly.
