Fact #163329

When:

Short story:

U2 play at the Boat Club, Nottingham, England, UK, Europe, supported by Fashion.

Full article:

Bono (vocalist, U2) : I think there was about four people there.  I played that concert in my bare feet because I lost my suitcase.

Annie Roseberry (A+R person, Island Records) : I think I was at all the London gigs on this tour, plus the Nottingham Boat Club.  I don't remember anything particularly exceptional happening except a gradual realisation over this little tour that other people were getting the same feeling about them as I did that very first time I saw them in Belfast.  You started to see the same kids at the shows at the front and there was a real sense of belonging to a special club.

There were a lot a very sceptical people at Island Records who I think thought that Bill and I hadn't got a clue what we were doing and that we and the band probably wouldn't be at Island for very long either - this was far from typical Island music in those days when Marley and Reggae were what Island stood for. The Press Office were very supportive but amongst the old Islanders there was an air of quiet cynicism. It was so exciting for me to see something that I sanctioned for the first time starting to affect other people around me and slowly but surely you could see people being won over by the bands sheer enthusiasm for life and what they were saying musically.  This was joyous music and whether you liked it or not you came a way from a gig feeling that your spirits had been uplifted. I was so young and naiive and new to the business in those days I had no preconceptions of where this could lead and how big they could become – I just wanted people to love them as much as I did and it seemed to be working. I have to say that I don't remember Fashion at all although later on in my career I worked with them briefly when I was at CBS.

The band themselves in those days were very shy - particularly Larry. Adam was the one who I used to hang out with - the others generally retired to their beds relatively early leaving myself, Adam, Paul and a few others to put the world to right until the early hours. Paul and I became very close friends and he has been very supportive to me in my career. One of the other very important things about the band is their loyalty to the people around them and this has really been a very important part of their development and perhaps even their success.

They never forgot people that helped them along the way and that is rare in this business. I have to say that Paul McGuiness (and I think the band would agree with me here) has been an equal part of their success - without Paul they just would not be where they are today it is as simple as that. He is the greatest Manager I have had the privelege to  work with and they are without doubt the greatest band.
