Andy Bell (gtr/vocs) : In the summer of 1995 we got together with our lawyer to go through some contracts and Mark kind of said, ‘Oh, by the way, I’m leaving.’ It was a bit of a bombshell. We still had a couple of gigs to do, and he agreed to do those. The last one was in Barcelona, a festival. It was nightmare because, of course, our manager had decided we had to keep it all a secret from Creation or whoever.

So we did this really appalling gig, played very badly. I was sitting after we’d played and I’d gone on stage to see my mates in the Charlatans playing. I was sitting at the back of the stage, looking at the drummer and thinking, ‘They all love each other, bloody hell, why don’t we?’ But that was the end of it. Mark went back to New York.

Laurence ‘Loz’ Colbert (drums) : I guess Ride ended because we just drifted apart. We were teenagers when we started. We were friends, not a bunch of seasoned musicians, and the whole concept started to move apart towards the end. I don’t think we knew how to give and take musically. We weren’t communicating properly and it was all compounded by having had some success early on, quite quickly, and we never quite got to grips with that. I don’t think any of us had the facility to turn that into a long-lasting career.

You feel pressure to be all the things that people want you to be and you have to look to yourself to see if you’ve got it and maybe we were sort of freaking out. I don’t know.
