Fact #159915

When:

Short story:

The Jimi Hendrix Experience do live radio interviews at WKYC, to promote this night's gig at Public Music Hall, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. During the day, Jimi buys a Corvette Stingray from Blaushild's Chevrolet, paying the $8,000 cost in cash.

Full article:

Jane Scott (reporter, Cleveland Plain Dealer) : The day of the concert, I accompanied Hendrix as he bought a blue Corvette at Blaushild's Chevrolet Headquarters in Shaker Heights. He may not have been the usual customer there, in his big black hat and dreadlocks, but he knew what he wanted. He startled the staff by peeling $8,000 out of his pocket and paying for the car in cash.

Leon Dicker (Hendrix attorney) : He drove it at once, down a one-way street. He was cited for that, as well as not having a driving licence.

Anonymous reviewer (Time magazine) : Shouting 'Stoned! Stoned!' his listeners surged forward, clawing at the kicking feet of the policemen who ringed the footlights. After the performance, they shredded curtains, ripped doors off their hinges and generally wreaked the worst havoc on the Music Hall since it was battered three years ago by The Beatles.

Jane Scott : He had a date on each arm, each cuddling up for attention. One of the crew whispered that the two women were sisters.

George Shuba (photographer) : I spent pretty close to almost eight hours with him all throughout the course of the day. One of the things he did—I wasn’t there with him—but he went out and bought one of his fans or his girlfriend a brand new Corvette. He paid cash for it.

I knew nothing about Jimi Hendrix except that we went on the WKYC radio and we went on the Chuck Dunaway show. He was a local disc jockey and had a big following. Jimi and one of his members of the band went on there and talked about different things. They were promoting the Spirit album. I have photos of him with Chuck and the Spirit album.

The thing I remember about Jimi Hendrix is that the first concert was at 7:30 and the second was at 9:30. What I tried to do, since I knew nothing about Jimi Hendrix, I wanted to watch and hear his music. See how he performed. What I did was I watched the first concert. But just prior to the concert, I remember the MC, the master of ceremonies, coming out and saying, “We think there is a bomb underneath the seats in the hall, so could everybody stand up and lift up your seats to look and see if there’s a bomb?” And like a stupid fool I lifted up my seat. I could have blown up, Fortunately there was no bomb there.

When I watched him play, I had never seen anyone play like he played. I mean, he made that thing dance. The music that came out of that guitar was unbelievable.
He was left-handed. I am not a connoisseur of musical instruments. But I sent the pictures to Janie Hendrix (Jimi’s stepsister). She told me—I got a letter from her—she said she thought these were the best series of pictures ever taken at one venue that she had ever seen.

What else do I remember from that concert? Jimi went into what we called his duck position. I think he was sorta like Chuck Berry. At one point he played upside down. And at one point he literally took his guitar and smashed it into his amps. He couldn’t bust that guitar. He was having a tough time with it.

Leon Dicker : The next day, Hendrix left for Indiana and (manager, Mike) Jeffery had the car shipped to New York.
