Bernard Doherty (PR, LD Communications) : I went to my first BRIT Awards in 1988 with Tina Turner who was coming off four Grammies. It was very chaotically organized and security was so tight that night. Lots of top executives like Rob Dickins had been locked out, and even some of the performers couldn't get in, but such is the power of a woman with big hair, high heels and a leather miniskirt, looking a million-zillion rock star-a-rootie, that when we walked towards The Royal Albert Hall stage door, no-one asked for our tickets. The crowds parted, then all the security men parted for us, and we strolled to a box that was reserved for EMI Records and it was empty. So that was where we watched it all from.

This was the famous calamitous BRITs with The Who unexpectedly going on stage just as Rick Astley was stepping up to get his award. Poor Rick had to abruptly do a u-turn because The Who's manager Bill Curbishley said, 'I don't care where we are in the show, just fuckin' play, Roger." So they cranked up, went straight into Who Are You?, and Rick had to do a quick left turn.
