Fact #159426

When:

Short story:

On their The Wall tour, Pink Floyd play the second of five nights at Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, Long Island, New York State, USA.

Full article:

Jill Furmanovsky (photographer) : On the second night, when I was coming back on the tour bus at two o’clock in the morning – all the Floyd were staying in different hotels because they weren’t communicating well – and their manager Steve O’Rourke saw my cameras and asked if I’d shot the gig. I said I had and he went absolutely berserk, completely apeshit. He made me hand over the rolls of film. I had no choice. I was cornered on the tour bus. It was a terrible experience.

The rolls he got disappeared completely but he missed a couple, from which I was able to pull out three amazing shots. One of them is one of my favourites, showing Dave Gilmour during Comfortably Numb. It is a lovely shot. Dave is standing on top of the wall with a beam of light coming up from beneath him. I enhanced the beam a bit in the darkroom but only to make it look more like it really did on the night, hand-held because I was shooting secretly so I didn’t dare use a tripod in case any noticed me.

Subsequently, Steve O’Rourke apologised to me and The Floyd – including Roger Waters – have subsequently bought it from me. As a result, if they say they don’t want pictures now, I don’t listen to them.
