Fact #157147
When:
Short story:
Jimi Hendrix is re-united with his family in Seattle, Washington, USA. Plans to play at his old school, Garfield High, are scrapped when equipment isn't available. Hendrix makes a brief speech instead. Later, he is given the key to the city, then flies to Los Angeles for a show at Ackerman Ballroom, UCLA.
Full article:
Mitch Mitchell (drummer, JHE) : Jimi was asked to go back to his old school, Garfield High - from which he'd been more or less thrown out - to speak at the morning assembly. I remember him talking about it the day before and he really didn't want to do it, although he could see the humour of it.
Richard Altaraz (student) : Pat O'Day, a Seattle promoter, walked out and announced there would be no concert. Then Jimi came out, acting very shy. He said he was real glad to be back, that it was really nice, but strange. He didn't seem to know what to say. He asked if there were any questions. Someone asked why he was wearing a hat. He laughed and said 'If I take off my hat, my head will fall off.' Then he added, 'It's been nice to be here,' and he walked off the stage.
Jimi Hendrix : Man, that Seattle thing was really something. The only keys I expected to see in that town were from the jailhouse. But I met my family and we were happy for a change. I told my dad, I could buy you a home. I want to buy you a home this winter. I've got a six year old sister, Janie, who I'd never seen. She's a lovely little girl. She keeps every article she reads about me and all the pictures. I've got a picture of her, she's so cute.
