Tom Ferguson (diary entry) : Aaaahhhh!!! Rock'n'roll! … Ooops, sorry about that but the Dylan, Kinks, Richman and Mink De Ville concerts of the past few weeks pale into insignificance (almost) when compared to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers at the Marquee tonight. It was loud and hot and sweaty and 90 minutes of adrenaline rush and I had my faith in rock'n'roll restored. Even my watch broke out in a sweat. I used to read about gigs that were symbolic of everything rock'n'roll represents, now I've been at one. I even fell in love during the support band…

Johnny Black : During this visit, Petty played a concert for the BBC tv show Old Grey Whistle Test. My girlfriend Carol White, who works at the BBC, managed to get tickets. It's not the best kind of gig for a band like this to play, with cameras pointed at them and an audience which, when it books its tickets, doesn't actually know which band it's going to see, but Petty did remarkably well. He was a lot looser than the last time I saw him, but still great rock'n'roll, especially a storming finale of Shout and a supercharged encore of I Fought The Law. Then there was the added bonus of being able to go home and watch it all again on tv.
