Fact #156443

When:

Short story:

Stone Roses play at Alexandra Palace, London, England, UK, Europe.

Full article:

Ian Brown (vocalist, Stone Roses) : We wanted to make things special for our fans, give them a whole day of experience … but Ally Pally wasn't what it should have been.

Phil Jones (promoter) : The sound-check was superb, then the audience came in and somebody cocked it up.

Rick Witter (Shed Seven) : I got to the front early and, when they came on, I really needed a piss, so I had to just get it out there and do it at the front. I wasn’t about to lose my place.

Ian Brown : We used a friend who was a sound engineer, but he'd never done anything anywhere near that massive. The sound was poor. After the show, me and John (guitarist John Squire) left in a car and didn't say anything for two hours.

Rick Witter : They didn’t particularly play well, but that’s something that’s been proven over the years with the Stone Roses - it was about the atmosphere, the anticipation. Loads of kids in beanie hats - the atmosphere was the best I’d ever seen at a gig. (Editorial note - the only other gig Mr Witter had ever been to was The Blue Aeroplanes in the Fleece And Firkin, Bristol). Everyone was so excited that something was happening in music that was credible and cool. I had to travel a long way but it was well worth it. It was one of the first times they played Fools Gold. Everyone was looking forward to that. It was an event. Anyone who was there was lucky.
