Former El Paso County sheriff's sergeant Jesus Gurrola is sentenced to five years supervised probation and a $500 fine for threatening to extort money from singer Johnny Cash. Gurrola, who pleaded guilty to the extortion charge on February 13, is also required to serve 500 hours community service as part of the sentence imposed by U.S. District Judge Harry Lee Huspeth. Gurrola had written Cash a letter in late January, 1984, threatening to mail the singer's arrest records and sheriff's mug shot to various publications including People magazine, Parade magazine and National Enquirer.
