Robert Smith (The Cure) : The only downside of working with Ross as an outside producer was that, inadvertently or not, he made me aware that we were in competition, in a way I normally wouldn't think about when we were making an album so therefore things had to sound a certain way. He wouldn't have done that knowingly, I don't think, because he was much more concerned about the feel that was in the tracks and the tone of it. For him, the spiritual tone, actually, which was one of our disagreements.

The final mix process, where he brought someone in who had previously mixed AC/DC to mix our album, just to give it a sheen and a great sound when it was up against other albums … I'd never really thought in those terms before. We got rid of the bloke after two weeks because, if you listened to it just as a wall of sound, it sounded great, but we're not a heavy metal band. It didn't sound like us.

I think the compromise I reached … when we did the demos for The Cure album, it sounded fantastic, and they piss all over the final album. If that comes out as a DeLuxe edition I'll re-mix that album as an extra CD. It doesn’t sound the way it was meant to.
