Fact #138316

When:

Short story:

Sandie Shaw and The Paramounts [later to become Procol Harum] play at The Orchid Ballroom, Purley, England, UK.

Full article:

Gary Brooker [The Paramounts] : Backing Sandie Shaw was a purely financial decision. When you're looking at the month or two ahead and you've only got five gigs and someone says, 'Back Sandie Shaw and we'll give you fifty quid a week,' you do it.
(Mojo, September 1995)

Gary Brooker [The Paramounts] : We were going down then. We needed to fill in some work of some sort and she was looking for a band to back her on her very first tour. I don't know how we got suggested but they came and listened to us, and I think it was quite good for Sandie just to team up with a band. She had a very distinctive voice but she hadn't been on stage up til then.

Of course it sounded nothing like her records at all. I mean, crikey, her records had instruments like trombones on them. We made an effort to make a kind of trombone sound on a Hohner electric piano, but there was no musical director or anything. It was all just left down to us to decide how to play the songs. As long as her manager, Evie Taylor, was happy, and Sandie was happy, that was that.
