Fact #132091
When:
Short story:
The Siege Of Leningrad, aka The 900-day Siege, begins as German troops surround the city and place it under blockade. At least 641,000 people will die during the Siege, most of whom will be buried in mass graves in different cemeteries. When John Denver, many years later visits Leningrad's Piskariovskoye Memorial Cemetery where literally hundreds of thousands of victims of the Siege of Leningrad are buried, he will be inspired to write his song Let Us Begin [What Are We Making Weapons For?]. The 2006 song When The War Came by The Decemberists is also about the siege.
