Short story:

Full article:

Gary Lewis : We went into the studio looking for a second record, and Snuff (Garrett, producer) said to me, "Don't get really cocky or anything like that just because This Diamond Ring went to No1. There are a billion fly-by-night one-hit artists out there. We gotta concentrate and make this second one the best. We were in the studio for about two days cutting song after song and at the end of it, Snuff just said, "Nope, there's just nothing here that I want to put out."

Right then, at four in the morning, Glen D. Hardin walks in and says,"Listen to this. I just kinda finished it. Let me know what you think." And he played Count Me In on the piano. Snuff jumped up and said, "That's it" That's it! Let's record it right now." Glen D was in a group called The Shindogs at that time on the tv show Shindig!. They were, like, the house band.
