When:

Short story:

Taking Back Sunday end a UK tour at The Academy, Brixton, London, supported by My Chemical Romance.

Full article:

Johnny Black (audience) : I drove up to this gig from Wiltshire with my son, Will, who had introduced me to both bands via his CD collection. My Chemical Romance were superb, battling against a very mushy sound system, and winning because of their seemingly boundless energy and the strength of their huge, anthemic choruses.

Taking Back Sunday put up a good effort, but were ultimately defeated by the sound which left the subtlety of all their backing vocals swimming in sonic gloop. The audience gamely attempted to sing the backing vocals for them at a couple of points, and managed to do rather well, actually rendering up quite a harmonically sophisticated noise but, heart-warming though the effort was, it couldn’t quite save the night. This is no criticism of the band – they played well, put on a good show and tried hard, but the sound was just a mess. Standing directly behind the sound desk helped a bit but, even there, it wasn’t good.

The atmosphere, however, was great. People kept coming up to talk to us. One black guy who looked like he should be in Outkast, pumped Will’s hand vigourously because he noticed that they were both wearing Avenged Sevenfold t-shirts. “AVENGED!” he shouted out with a big grin all over his face. Later, he and his girlfriend played a chasing game around us.

When Will and I went to see Atreyu in Oxford a couple of months back, I noticed the same good vibes. Presumably it’s a feature of emo audiences.
