Dave Davies (guitarist, The Kinks]: Tired Of Waiting For You sort of linked The Kinks' two styles. It was sort of rock but a bit more melodic. I think Ray would really know why the change took place more than I; he was very prolific at that time - like, every two hours he'd have another song, you know. I suppose you can look back on anything and analyze it, But I Don't think at the time we were that aware of trying to create or contrive a certain type of music. It wasn't until '69 when we started touring America that our music started to change a bit. We had been banned by the immigration people, because some people who were supposedly representing us screwed us up with the tax people and the musicians union - we knew virtually nothing about it.
Pete Quaife (bassist, The Kinks] : Tired Of Waiting was a little bit slower and sweeter so we tried to toughen it up with Dave's guitar, and it worked, which surprised me. That was when I started to get a little bit tongue in cheek about what we were doing. "Oh, I thought we were a rock'n'roll band." Dave was like that as well. He was getting a bit antsy about the direction it was going. He and I both felt we were the original rock'n'roll band, the heavy metal to be, and all of a sudden we started drifting off into this Noel Coward sort of era and it was like, "Hey, what are we doing guys?"
Eventually there came a point where I went, "Whoa! This is fucking ridiculous." I felt it was getting just one degree away from bubble gum. I didn't like it.
