Fact #117451

When:

Short story:

The other members of Black Sabbath decide that they've finally had enough of lead singer Ozzy Osbourne’s erratic drink and drug-fuelled behaviour, so they delegate drummer Bill Ward to sack him.

Ozzy Osbourne : I could never hold a job down, being in a band was a way of getting out of England, driving around Europe and having fun with the lads, getting a few beers and a few joints. Not much fun in Lozells Road (Birmingham). One thing I will say: the first 10 years of Black Sabbath, the original four, was pretty incredible.

Tony Iommi : We had been together for a decade, but it got to a point where we couldn’t relate to each other any more. There were so many drugs flying around, coke and Quaaludes and Mandrax, and there was booze and late nights and women and everything else. And then you get more paranoid and you think, they hate me. We never fought, but it’s hard to get through to people, to communicate and solve things when everybody’s out of it.

Tony Iommi (guitarist, Black Sabbath) : We just couldn't continue with Ozzy. As much as everyone wanted us to, we just couldn't do it. Nothing was happening and it would have meant the end of the band.

Ozzy was going to clubs and getting really out of it and not coming home. It got to a stage where nothing was happening with him. He came apart on us.

Ozzy Osbourne : We were doing some rehearsals in L.A., and I was loaded, but then I was loaded all the time. It was obvious that Bill [Ward] had been sent by the others, because he wasn’t exactly the firing type. I can’t remember exactly what he said to me … but the gist was that Tony [Iommi] thought I was a pissed, coked-up loser and a waste of time for everyone concerned.

Ozzy Osbourne : I’d lost my way. When they fired me, I wasn’t doing anything, We’d been ripped off by managers, ripped off by lawyers, and I just thought. We’re only doing this to pay the f**king bills and buy drugs. It was just a bad time.

Ozzy Osbourne : I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel betrayed by what happened with Black Sabbath. We were four blokes who’d grown up together a few streets apart. We were like family, like brothers. And firing me for being f***ed up was hypocritical bulls**t. We were all f***ed up. If you’re stoned and I’m stoned and you’re telling me that I’m fired because I’m stoned how can that be? Because I’m slightly more stoned than you are?
