Fact #117411

When:

Short story:

The Sex Pistols record a live performance for UK tv show So It Goes at Granada Studios, Quay St, Manchester.

Full article:

Glen Matlock : Originally, all they wanted was an interview with John, but we said we wouldn’t do the show unless we could play. So then they said, OK, but keep it short.

Jordan : Malcolm asked me to go to the recording to add a bit of ambience. Tony Wilson turns up to greet us with clogs on. There was another band on wearing blue satin suits; all the kids were drinking coke.

John Lydon : Clive James worked on the show as the sidekick who warms up the crowd during the show. He would stand in the middle of the place and try to be funny. He threw a few insults our way, and I threw a few back.

Tony Wilson : There were terrible scenes in dining room B all afternoon, like when I had to tell Jordan that she couldn’t wear her swastika armband on tv. And then they had their huge row with Clive James. He really disliked them intensely. After that day, Clive and alternative culture went their separate ways.

Jordan : You’ve got Clive James, who is a terrible Australian straightie, being huffy and shocked, so we just waded in. I called him a baldy old Shiela. John just called him Bruce for an hour.

Tony Wilson : They’d had quite a few drinks and, although they were supposed to do three and a half minutes, they just kept playing for about seven, and then trashed their gear. The audience was stunned and, when it was over, there was total silence except that you could hear the producer’s footsteps stamping down from the control booth looking for somebody to hit.

Glen Matlock : After the show, I had to go back and get my bass. The studio was deserted, except for one real old guy, in his seventies, who was clearing up. He said, ‘That was fuckin’ great, stirring them all up like that.’ He had really enjoyed it.
