Fact #113905

When:

Short story:

During his On The Run Tour, Paul McCartney plays a free concert in the Zócalo de la Ciudad de México, Mexico City, Mexico, to an audience estimated at 230,000.

Full article:

Scott Rodger (manager) : I think Zocalo Square has been the most memorable McCartney show for me so far. was the free concert in Zocalo Square in Mexico City. 80,000 people were admitted inside the Zócalo, but seven giant screens on nearby streets allowed an estimated 150,000 more to watch. It literally brought Mexico City to a standstill.

Because it was an open public square there was no possibility of a soundcheck but Paul wanted to warm up. Well, there was a Holiday Inn on the corner so he took over a conference room and set up a second backline with a couple of speakers on sticks, very lo-fi, like an indie band rehearsal room. Getting Paul in there was chaos because there were already people everywhere, hundreds of police everywhere, but once he started playing, the crowd outside, there were tens of thousands of them out there already, could hear them playing Beatles songs for about an hour, and it built so much tension and excitement, which made the evening show all that more thrilling. A priceless moment. I doubt I'll ever experience anything like that again in my lifetime.
