Iron Maiden release their debut album, Iron Maiden, on EMI Records in the UK.

Ashley Goodall : The album went in at No4 in the UK, and No1 in Germany, and Maiden were off and running.

Ashley Goodall : I think the success of Maiden was the trigger for a whole re-boot of EMI, reconnecting with their rock past. Instead of drooling over Marshall Hain and Paul McCartney, they had a real meaty rock act to be proud of, and shortly after that they signed Gang Of Four and then Dexy's Midnight Runners, and it was a viable company again.

Rod Smallwood (manager, iron Maiden) : The first album came out in February 1980 and debuted on the UK chart at No4. All in all, it ended up doing about 350,000 worldwide, which isn't bad for a group that was turned down by CBS because the songs weren't strong enough.

Steve Harris (founder, Iron Maiden) : The plan at the start was just to get a deal and tour, there were no thoughts of world domination ... to go straight into the charts at Number Four was way beyond our expectations, it was outrageous really.
