His sound : warm, live, dry feel. A hands-on producer, creating effects for comedy records gave Martin grounding in studio trickery, but he also contributes keyboards and orchestral arrangements.

His life : Martin trained at London's Guildhall School of Music, joined EMI in 1950 and, five years later, became Britain's youngest-ever record company head, at EMI subsidiary Parlophone. Having erased his Cockney accent in the Fleet Air Arm, Martin epitomised upper-middle class Englishness when he signed The Beatles in 1962. In 1964, Martin productions spent 34 weeks out of 52 in the UK No1 slot. In 1965 he formed his own company, Associated Independent Recordings (AIR), still thriving, although Martin retired in 1997
