Fact #106679

When:

Short story:

The Searchers start a UK tour supported by Dionne Warwick, The Zombies and The Isley Brothers.

Full article:

Chris White (The Zombies) : On the very first day of the tour, we were setting off from London for Liverpool and The Isley Brothers didn't arrive. So the tour manager said, 'Right, we're off.' About half an hour after we got to Liverpool, this black London cab turned up with the Isleys inside. They'd arrived as the coach was leaving and told the cabbie 'Follow that coach', but he didn't manage to catch up on the motorway. There was a huge argument about who was going to pay for it.

Mike Pender (The Searchers] : We were all secondary modern lads from Liverpool and The Zombies were like public school types from the south, so we were always taking the mickey, but two things about The Zombies really impressed me. The obvious one was that Colin Blunstone had a totally unique voice but, even more than that, Rod Argent stood out as a real musician. Even in the company of some great artists, Rod was clearly very gifted. I always thought he was the brains of the band and, in some ways, the odd one out.

Rod Argent (The Zombies) : Alan Ellsden was the backing band for that tour, so they had to play Walk On By with Dionne Warwick, and when it got to that little trumpet thing in the middle, he fluffed it the first night. Now Dionne was pretty uptight anyway, and she just whirled round on him and poor Alan froze and started shaking. From that minute on, every night was worse than the last. He came to dread this little solo, because she would always turn and glare at him just as it started. By the end of the tour he was a nervous wreck. I felt so sorry for the poor sod.

On the whole though, I found Dionne a sweetie. Kept herself to herself pretty much but she was always very sweet to us.

Chris White (The Zombies) : There was always some friction between Rod and Colin. I remember Colin grabbed hold of the curtains one night before they opened. Rod was shouting 'You bastard!' just as the P.A came on'. When the curtains went back we went straight into the first number as if nothing had happened."
