The Four Tops were together for a decade before, during a Temptations' Detroit club gig , Motown tunesmith Brian Holland uttered the immortal line, 'I think I got a hit for you cats.' At 3am that night, they cut their Motown debut. It opens with brass stabs and whiplash fingersnaps underscoring those distinctive vocal harmonies, before Gil Askey's insinuating string arrangement sets the scene for Levi Stubbs' lead vocal, which wrings every drop of anguish from a tale of lost love and regret.
