Fact #104657

When:

Short story:

When The Beatles play at The Opera House, Blackpool, UK, their support groups are The Kinks and The High Numbers, later to become The Who.

Full article:

Ray Davies (The Kinks] : There was one show where The Who, then called The High Numbers, were on before us and then we were on just after them, and then The Beatles came on. It was quite a good package. We did two shows.

John Entwistle (The Who) : We were bottom of the bill and they were top of the bill. They couldn't understand why we were setting up this huge amount of equipment for ourselves.

Roger Daltrey (The Who) : I remember we were going down in the elevator to the stage to open for them and they got in the elevator and we all stood there dumbstruck. I mean literally, "It's them!" (laughs). We did our act and smashed our gear up. This was before we had hit records and the crowd was screaming their heads off - even at us, God knows why.

John Entwistle : When our stuff was taken off, they brought out The Beatles stuff, and it was half the size, and they were using the theatre's PA system, which was diabolical. The little microphones looked like electric shavers. We couldn't understand why they put themselves through such rubbish.

Roger Daltrey : We came off and they went on and you could not believe the noise. You couldn't hear one note they played. It was just incredible. I was awestruck at the time. I was awestruck with the image because to see someone who's that famous, it was the first time we'd seen anybody famous! And to stand in the same elevator as them... I mean we'd backed the Stones up before but the Stones were like us. They
weren't really famous, they were scumbags, just like us. But The Beatles were really famous.

Ray Davies : I loved watching them. They were a good rhythm section. Ringo was a really good drummer. I think he was the best element in the live band at that time. He just played very well. The band knitted together very well, very nice sound.
