When the Middle Earth closed in March 1969, London's hippies had to roll that next one on a Hapshash And The Coloured Coat album cover on the kitchen table, because the last visible underground stronghold had crumbled.


The Middle Earth blossomed in 1967 at 43 King Street, Covent Garden, in the wake of the original hippy haven, the U.F.O Club in Tottenham Court Road. "UFO was exotic," remembers scenester Jo Cruikshank, "but it wasn't nearly as memorable for me as Middle Earth. Middle Earth took your breath away.
