George Gershwin attends a publication party at the Shipwreck Inn, 107 Claremont Avenue, New York City, USA, for the book Weary Blues by Langston Hughes. During the party, Hughes signs a copy of the book for Gershwin, writing, "For George Gershwin, creator of beauty in blues, this book, Sincerely, Langston Hughes."
During a 12-week run at the top, the No1 song in the USA on this day is The Prisoner's Song by country music singer Vernon Dalhart. In 1998, it will be honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award and named by the Recording Industry Association of America as one of the Songs of the Century.
