The musical comedy Annie Get Your Gun, by Irving Berlin, is presented during a run of 1,147 performances at The Imperial Theatre, Broadway, New York City, USA.
Boxers Joe Louis and Billy Conn meet in a world heavyweight title rematch in New York City, USA. Conn, a lighter man than Louis, declares he will employ a 'hit and run' strategy, to which Louis responds just before the fight, saying 'He can run, but he can't hide.' The prediction proves right and Louis wins the fight by a knockout in the eighth round. The next day, a headline in the New York Times trumpets, 'Louis Proves His Own Prediction: Conn Could Run, but Couldn't Hide.' The quip soon enters common usage and, in 1956, it will inspire the song You Can Run [But You Can't Hide] by Solomon Burke. Joe Louis will tour America with Burke for some while to help promote the song.
