The R.I.A.A. [Recording Industry Association of America] launches its Diamond Awards category, which recognises sales of ten million copies or more of an audio recording. No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom becomes one of the first albums to receive the Diamond award, and other winners include Prince, Alanis Morissette, Pearl Jam, Green Day and The Backstreet Boys.
Purple Rain, the sixth album by Prince, is honoured for having achieved sales in excess of 10m, at the inaugural Diamond Awards in The Roseland Ballroom, New York City, USA.
