It is announced by the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) that with total of 114bn plays during 2019 on audio streaming services in the UK, more than 100bn music tracks were played for the first time in a single year. The UK's most-streamed track of 2019 was Lewis Capaldi's Someone You Loved - played over 228m times on audio streaming services.
Marty Grebb, keyboardist for The Buckinghams in the late 60s, dies aged 74, having suffered from cancer for some while. Grebb also played with artists including Bonnie Raitt, Leon Russell, Elton John and Eric Clapton.
Tommy Hancock, known as the godfather of West Texas music, dies aged 90.
Figures released by UK-based record labels' association the BPI, based on Official Charts Company data, show that 2019 marked the fifth consecutive year of growth in the consumption of recorded music in the UK. Among the statistics reported are that the equivalent of 154m albums were consumed across streaming and purchasing in 2019, up 7.5% on 2018, marking its highest level since 2006. There were 114bn music streams in 2019 – a 3,000% increase on 2012.

Lewis Capaldi is confirmed as the British breakout star of 2019, when it is announced that his song Someone You Loved was played over 228m times on audio streaming services including Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer. Other artists making the year-end top 10 include Lil Nas X, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Billie Eilish, while singer-songwriter Tones and I enjoyed an 11-week run at the top of the Official Singles Chart with Dance Monkey – the longest run by a female singer in Official Charts history.
Wiley begins a Twitter feud with Stormzy by posting the following message, "I’m old but you was tryna work with jay z who Ed brought in the room Cos if it wasn’t for Ed that session would not of happened lol your not with us your with them #Pagan I am 10 years younger than jay z and I will merc you everyday of the week #YourEasy #TooEasy (sic).” The message is a criticism of Stormzy for having bteamed up with Ed Sheeran on their recent track Own It.
Ellie Goulding posts a brief and somewhat enigmatic message - "EG4 // 2020 (sic)" - on Twitter, which is interpreted as meaning that her fourth album will be released in 2020.
