Fact #95898

When:

Short story:

Dion, Del Shannon, The Allisons and Joe Brown set off on a UK tour from The Palladium, Brighton, UK.

Full article:

Dion DiMucci : We had a lot of fun on that trip. There'd be me and Del at the back of the bus and we'd be doing George Jones and Hank Williams numbers. That was great.

I was unable to bring over a band of my own, or the Del-Satins, the five-piece vocal group I worked with. We were told, 'Just go over there.' So I appeared with whoever was available. I wouldn't say that the show represented me. I didn't even have my guitar.

Joe Brown : The Allisons opened the show, Del closed the first half and I'd go on just before Dion. I suppose I was lucky but we went down really well on that tour, and poor old Dion could not follow us. All the way through his show they were stamping their feet and shouting for me. It was embarrassing. I think I'd just had a hit record before the tour.

Eventually they came to me and asked if I would close the first half, which meant I'd effectively be second on the bill and I said, "Stuff it, not on your life." I was tearing them up. At the end of that tour Dion just couldn't close the show, so they moved Dion to close the first half and Del Shannon closed the show. And Del did well, he was great.
