A riot in Carandiru Penitentiary, Sao Paulo, Brazil, South America
results in 111 prisoners killed - 102 from gunshots fired by military police and nine from stab wounds apparently inflicted by other prisoners before the arrival of police. Very little effort was made by the authorities to communicate with the prisoners before the jail was stormed. The Carandiru Massacre is considered a major human rights violation in the history of Brazil, and is recorded in the songs Haiti by Caetano Veloso with Gilberto Gil, October 2, 1992 by Sepultura, and 19 Rebellions by Asian Dub Foundation.
