Fact #93012

When:

Short story:

The 'relocation' of the Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, Chickasaw and Choctaw Native American nations begins in America. Nearly 17,000 Native Americans will be forcibly moved from their homelands to what was then called Indian Territory, later to be known as Oklahoma. As many as 6,000 are estimated to have died along the route, which became known as 'The Trail Of Tears'. The songs Indian Reservation by John D. Loudermilk and Cherokee by Europe, both recount this appalling tale of man's inhumanity to man. Indian Sunset by Elton John examines the plight of the Native Americans in a similar way.
