Fact #92428

When:

Short story:

Janis Joplin's manager, Albert Grossman, announces her imminent departure from San Francisco band Big Brother And The Holding Company. On the same day, the band plays a gig in San Diego, California, USA.

Full article:

Sam Andrews (Big Brother and the Holding Company) : Number one on the charts and she left the band. You just don't do that. I mean ...I wish I could have talked to her a little bit. We were all real confused. There was a lot of drug use about right there. It was a real confusing time.

We launched her and it really worked in that period... just plain and simple. She should have stayed with the band at least six months, or a year more, if she was going to leave. She should have at least waited through this number one record period thing. But having said that, about that other point. In a large way it is true. She needed a band who were more in tune and could support her and all of that. She didn't get it until Full Tilt Boogie Band.

Sam Andrew : Maybe Grossman's influence on Janis has been over emphasised. Big Brother had its own problems aside from the musicianship. We were getting stoned and not taking care of business in the right way. It was a mistake, though, for her to leave when she did, no matter how much justification there may have been for it. We were right on top of a number one album, and we shouldn't have tinkered with it at that time.

It didn't take me by surprise. I knew it for months. Janis would talk to me about it all the time. In fact, I was suggesting that she call different guitar players to replace me. I told her to contact Jerry Miller from Moby Grape, but, in the end, I went with her. It wasn't a surprise to me, but it was like a total shock to the rest of the band, particularly Peter Albin.
