Fact #91960

When:

Short story:

In San Francisco, California, USA, Augustus Owsley Stanley starts his first LSD factory, making large quantities of acid available and affordable for the first time. The San Francisco music scene will never be the same again.

Full article:

Mick Fleetwood (drummer, Fleetwood Mac) : Karmically, there is a grey area, but quite literally Owsley turned the world on. A lot of casualties came out of it and I'm not advocating it, but the Woodstocks wouldn't have happened without it - and he was behind it all. To this day I still keep in touch with him. He makes this fantastic jewellery and lives half the year in a tent on the Gold Coast near Cairns in Australia. A fascinating guy.

Tommy LiPuma (A + R man, A+M Records) : The music scene actually hadn't exploded yet, but it was starting to. It was cheap fare. It was $24 round-trip to San Francisco (from Los Angeles). So, you know, we'd go up there (LiPuma and Bob Krasnow) and we were friends with the two heavy disc jockeys in San Francisco, Tom Donahue and Bob Mitchell.

We'd go up every weekend - this is when Timothy Leary and the whole acid thing started. So, you know, I had my first acid trip somewhere around '65 or '66. And that sort of put a whole new slant on listening to music. So it was this combination of Bob and I going to San Francisco together, and we became closer friends. By '68 he started Blue Thumb, and in '69 he asked me to join him as a partner. And I decided to go. I decided that I just needed a change.
