Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul And Mary] : We actually didn't perform in the White House for Kennedy. By the time we got to the White House, it was for Johnson. And that was to honor U Thant, who was then the Acting Secretary for the United Nations.
Prior to that, we had been invited to celebrate with the Kennedys, the Second Anniversary of his Inauguration. We had a wonderful time. That was a huge ball, with 2,700 - 3,500 guests.
Then we drove through the streets of Washington in our first limo, behind a police escort, to Lyndon Johnson's house where we met the President and Vice-president, and their ladies, and the other guests who had performed at the show previously, and we did it all again.
Gene Kelly tap danced with Jack Kennedy. It was a great night. It was a beautiful night. He was a very warm and generous man. He may have had other faults, but I didn't see any that night.
