Gene Pitney : It was a sheer fluke that I was in England to plug it. The real reason I was over was that someone in New York had found out that there was a thing called Mecca Ballrooms in England, and they thought, 'Hey, this is perfect, we'll send Gene over with (his recent single) Mecca and it'll be a great hit.' But, when I got there, I soon realised that no-one at EMI was interested because I was a ballad singer and Mecca was a ballroom tour. So I cancelled the tour.

Then I thought to myself, 'Seeing as I'm here and I have all this time on my hands, I may as well do the television and promotion with the new song I have out in the States, Tulsa, which was a far stronger song anyway. I did every tv show, every interview, everything the record company wanted, and it really took off. It was the one big record which really broke me in Europe.
