Billy Bragg : It had always been an ambition to do Top Of The Pops, and to get on with something as political as Between The Wars was very satisfying. I never saw the point of The Clash's dogma of not doing the programme, especially seeing what Pan's People did to Bank Robber. I didn't really want to see a dance interpretation of one of my songs. I can't remember who else was on that first programme, but I did one when the England football team were there, and I noticed that Peter Shilton, the goalkeeper, was the only one who couldn't clap in time. That really worried me.
