Fact #63257

When:

Short story:

New Los Angeles band The Colours make a four-song demo recording. Eventually the group will evolve into The Bangles, who will re-record two of these tracks for their debut album.

Full article:

Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) : Originally, we called ourselves The Colours but there was another band by that name. My brother John had an old copy of a 1965 Life magazine, with a picture of Ed Sullivan wearing a Beatles’ wig on the cover, that said the youth were taking over, affecting the direction of the culture. A popular hairdo, the Supersonic Bang, was mentioned. Vicki and I thought it would be a great name for a band, but Debbi thought it was too long, so we got rid of Supersonic. For a while, we were The Bangs, and we cut our hair into Bangs to go with it.

Then we had to change our name again because of another group, so we added extra letters. The Bangles is nice. Besides meaning a kind of bracelet, the dictionary gives the word another meaning, in reference to costume jewellery - to hang loose. Be ready but relaxed. That's a concept we like!

Michael Steele (The Bangles) : To the others, the Bangles was their first or second band, for me it was my fifteenth! I was doing music for such a long time, so when things exploded, I'd had enough of it. I had to get away from showbiz and out of Los Angeles, California, USA. I hated that city - and actually I still do, but out of necessity we're there once again.
