Fact #59037

When:

Short story:

A historic day on the path to rock'n'roll, when ASCAP [American Society of Composers Artists and Performers] imposes a ban on radio playing any of the songs it controls. ASCAP represents the rights of many powerful Broadway songwriters, and is fighting a rearguard action to keep blacks and country writers off the radio. The direct result of the ASCAP action will be the formation of the BMI [Broadcast Music Industry] which will admit songwriters of all races, colours and creeds. BMI thus allowed the voices of minorities and younger people to be heard, paving the way for r'n'b and rock'n'roll.
