Fact #58767

When:

Short story:

At The Battle Of The Nek [aka The Battle of Sari Bair], part of the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey, Europe, during the First World War, two regiments of the Australian 3rd Light Horse Brigade mount a tragic and futile attack on the Ottoman trenches on a knoll known as Baby 700. The disastrous engagement leaves nearly 400 Australian cavalrymen dead. This tragic story will inspire P.J. Harvey to write her 2011 song The Colour Of The Earth.
