Doc Pomus : I was born in Brooklyn on June 27, 1925, and very early in life I got infantile paralysis and I was on crutches. I played a variety of musical instruments, mostly alto saxophone.

When I was about 17 or 18, I'd go down to Greenwich Village to hear Frankie Newton's band playing at George's Tavern. I started hanging out there and ended up having a gig as a singer in the joint. What was really interesting was that I didn't know any blues. I just knew one or two and I started singing in the place because I saw the owner was about to throw me out for hanging around the bandstand. So I told him I was a singer and Frankie Newton, a great trumpet player and a really nice fellow, told me to sit in with the band. I knew one blues at that time, Piney Brown Blues, and I did Piney Brown and when they asked me to do an encore I did Piney Brown again. I really was not so much a blues fan then but a Joe Turner fan.

Dion : Doc Pomus was like a father to me. Very much so. He really encouraged me. I miss him. He was just a great guy. I just used to like talking to Doc.
