Under the name Hugo and Luigi, Peretti and his partner Luigi Creatore enjoyed their first minor hit, Young Abe Lincoln, in 1955. The pair became significant players in the evolving New York r'n'b scene, making enough money to purchase Roulette Records, where they adopted the nom-de-plume Mark Markwell and composed such hits as Can't Help Falling In Love for Elvis Presley and Oh-Oh Falling In Love Again for Jimmie Rodgers. Developing their production skills at RCA, they worked with Sam Cooke and the Isley Brothers, as well as producing The Tokens' smash The Lion Sleeps Tonight. The pair then launched Avco Records where they wrote and produced hits for The Stylistics.
